A great year for Glen Ellyn at 70#

Not much is written about or even known about the 70 lbs. program. The program is only in its 2nd year and most of the boys have never even put on football pads before. This year the program was able to field two teams of about 20 boys per team. The teams consisted of 2nd and 3rd grade boys who were under the age of 9 and weighed, with pads, under 79 lbs. Glen Ellyn  fielded  a Green team and a White team. The Green team finished the season 7-1 and only allowed 12 points scored against them all year. The White team finished 8-0, beating Wheaton in over time, to preserve a perfect season. »full story

News from the Playoffs.

The 80lbs. GOLD Eagles are going to the SUPER BOWL. After a great week of practice and pre game warm up, the Eagles were ready to take on the world. Jordan Hassan started the game off with a booming kick-off, pinning Buffalo Grove back at their own 25 yd. line. After three plays and a punt it was time for the Eagle “O” to take over. All year long the offensive line has been opening huge holes for the backs and today was no exception.  Led by Kane,Garland,Hanson,Marshall,Buckley,Hassan,McDonough and Gorski, the four horsemen marched down the field and scored on a short run by Marconi, to make the score 6-0, Eagles. The rest of the first half was dominated by the Eagle “D”. The front seven of Berg, Dayton, Hassan, Dan, Kane, Haeffner, and Joey T. never let the powerful Buffalo Grove offense get on track. Halftime score still 6-0 Eagles. The start of the 2nd half seemed to begin slow for Eagles as their opening drive stalled and they were forced to punt. Jordon Hassan came out to punt and what a punt it was. He kicked it into the Buffalo Grove end zone for a touch back and this seemed to awaken the Eagles. Another great stand by the “D” forced Buffalo Grove to punt giving the Eagles the ball with great field position. Wanting to go for the knock out, Coach Dayton spread three players out wide. Buffalo Grove moved their boys into position to cover the upcoming pass. As Tyler Dayton dropped back for what seemed like a pass, he stopped and handed it off to Marconi, who ran untouched into the end zone. Eagles now led 12 -0. With time now a major concern for Buffalo Grove and not being able to run the ball against the tough Eagle “D”, Buffalo Grove attempted to pass their way back into the game. Three little things Buffalo Grove forgot about, Wags, Koehler and Strittmater. These three defensive backs knocked down every pass that was thrown their way. It was now time to finally put the game away for the Eagles. After running Koehler, Hassan, and Marconi off right tackle for six straight plays in a row, the set up was in place to put the game away. Tyler Dayton faked the off tackle right, tucked the ball and spun left around end, to go untouched into the end zone. Eagles now lead 18-0. Preserving the shut out now became the main goal of the “D” and they did not disappoint. Final score Eagles 18 Buffalo Grove 0. Another great game by the offensive and defensive lines, as they have done all season long, they are the heart and soul of this team. The Eagles will play Bartlett on Sunday Nov. 14th, 8:30am, at Northern Illinois University. Lets get a big crowd out their and support the EAGLES. Also remember the 115 lbs. Silver made it to the SUPER BOWL so get out and watch both these teams. Good Luck next week at the SUPER BOWL Glen Ellyn.

Back To The Super Bowl for 115 Silver Green

The Big Green, 115 lb. Silver team is going back to the Super Bowl as a result of their convincing win over a previously unbeaten team from Bloomingdale. The score was 18 to 7. As everyone knows by now this is the same group of kids that won the 100 lb Silver championship last year at NIU. With our offensive line providing gaping holes, our running backs consistently gained yardage up the middle and around the ends. It was an awesome effort against a team that had only given up two touchdowns all year. With Tim Hollowed and Corey Fisher leading the way, Bloomingdale knew they were going to be in a dog fight. The first half ended with the Big Green up 6 to 0. In the second half Corey Fisher on a strong run up the middle. The score was know 12 to 0. Bloomingdale then started moving the ball. With the ball inside our 10 yard line, our defensive unit held for four plays. Unfortunately, their was a penalty called against us and Bloomingdale retained possession and got another four downs. They finally scored from the one foot out for their first score of the game. They converted the extra point and the score was now 12 to 7. With under three minutes left , they tried an onside kick which we recovered. A couple of play later , Tim Hollowed broke loose behind some superb blocking and scored on a 40 plus yard run sealing our victory.

Big Green\'s defensive unit deserves special praise. On certain occasions, they bent, but they never broke. Remember , they were up against the most powerful offensive team in the league and they dominated them.

Our offensive team also deserves praises. It scored 3 touchdowns against a team that had only given 2 all year. What a performance!

115lb Silver Green Wins First Round of Playoffs

In a convincing manner, BIG GREEN beat a very good Wheaton Rams Red team 31 to 6. Tim Hollowed (#29) led the team with 3 touchdowns. Casey Curtis (#2) and Corey Fisher (#35) each rushed for touchdowns. Defensively, Casey Curtis was unstoppable, with an unrelenting rush on the Wheaton quarterback, and a solo sack in the Wheaton backfield. At fullback, Corey Fisher drove through the Wheaton defensive line, opened holes for running backs Hollowed and Curtis, and kept the Eagles ground game moving with critical first-downs. Every player on this Eagles team gave 110%, fighting through not only a tough Wheaton defense but gale-force winds on Pope Field. Both offense and defensive lines kept the Rams at bay. Most of these kids have seen playoff and championship level play as the 2003 100lb Silver Championship team, and brought back that intensity in this game. BIG GREEN will now face the Bloomingdale Bears White (9-0) in the Semi-finals. -- Don Warman

The 80lbs. GOLD Team made it eight straight wins in a row, beating Downers Grove 6-0, in the first round of the play offs. The early Saturday morning started out fine but by game time the clouds rolled in, the wind picked up and the temperature dropped like a rock. This would affect both teams passing attacks.   After receiving the opening kick-off the Eagles drove the ball 55 yds. for a TD.  Hassan was the featured back on the drive, as he pounded the ball up the middle and then broke one for a 25yd. TD run. Because of the weather this would become the Eagle game plan, just pound the ball up the middle and off tackle. The “D” was able stop any drive or trick play Downers Grove threw at them. After having absolutely no success running the ball, Downer Grove attempted to move the ball through the air. This also ended in failure as Wags picked off another pass to add to his season total. The “D” added another shut out and only allowed D.G. one first down all game. On Sunday Nov. 7th at 10 am the Eagles will host Buffalo Grove at Newton Field, hope to see a big crowd there.»schedule

News from the Field:  Week 8! »pictures

Glen Ellyn v. Glen Ellyn:  Oct. 16th Showdown between 100 lb Silver White and Green. Green scored first, the result of a 60 yd pass from Ben Gaspar to Miles Purdom (of which at least 30 yds was in the air, it was very impressive). Miles was tackled inside the 5, but Green scored on the next play for a 6-0 lead. Later in the first quarter, Nathan Borsodi of the White team, took a statue of liberty play around left end for 50 yards, and a 6-6 tie. That was all the scoring in a tightly contested first half.

The second half opened with a Miles Purdom kick return to the White 25 yard line. White kept Green out of the end zone on repeated possessions, but remained bottled up in their own end until, with 6 minutes remaining in the game, Green managed first and goal on the White 8. On second and goal from the 3, the White defense lead by Jack Hasso and Nathan Marcus (among others) forced a fumble. Now with less than 6 minutes to play, the White team put together the drive of their season. 97 yards, 10+ plays, nonenap longer than 15 yards, to the game winning touchdown. The offensive line of Alex Gorski, Bobby Miller, Tyler Luick, Nathan Marcus, and ? opened nice holes for Nathan Borsodi, Jake Stevenson, and Jack Hasso. Hasso scored the game winner with less than 2 minutes to play from two yards out. It was well executed game by both teams and all the boys shared a “100 lb, 100%” cheer at midfield after the game. Green (4-3), with a win this weekend over Wheaton Red (2.5-4.5) will clinch a play-offs spot, but for one day White (2.5-4.5) ruled. White finishes in West Chicago (1.5-5.5)

115lb Silver/Green Is Back

On a very rainy Saturday morning, Big Green returned to its winning ways, beating the Lombard Falcons Purple 34 to 0 . This win was the result of the previous weeks practices. The team worked extremely hard on its fundamentals, good blocking and tackling. The results were very much in evidence this Saturday. With the defense establishing itself with two consecutive interceptions by #20 Joe Serruto on the Falcon's first two series, the die had been cast. After that, our offense quickly kicked in, led by its first string backfield of #29 Tim Hollowed, #2 Casey Curtis, #35 Corey Fisher and #45 Rob Neyland. The offensive line executed flawlessly . This was truly an excellent performance by the entire team .

The regular season now over, 115lb Silver/Green finished the season with a record of 7 and 1, and will face Wheaton Rams Red in the first game of the playoffs. We are ready! -- Don Warman

130 LB SILVER - WHITE

Glen Ellyn - Well the rains ended, the skies opened up and the angels did sing as this gritty team took the field.  Some last minute personnel changes needed to be made to get these guys ready to play.  Wow, did they play a great game.  They worked the game plan and controlled the ball.  There were ball security problems all game but the Eagles ended up ahead in the turnover category.  We had 3 interceptions and recovered at least 2 fumbles.  The first scoring drive was a beautiful display of rough and tough football as the horses of my line plowed good holes for the running backs to run through.  Finally ending on a 6 yard wedge into the end zone with 1st time scorer Chris Huppertz.  Chris stepped up to take on the Fullback roll and played a great game.  The following play would see him capitalize on a nice extra point catch from Chris Cochrane.  Cochrane still wanted to get into the game and would later in the game with a stellar play.  It all starts with another devastating wedge blocking play but Cochrane ran a tremendous fake holding the ball while the pile pushed in front of him.  He then popped up and tossed to a wide open Eric Toombs and it was a foot race from then on.  No one could touch him as he opened up and outran the defenders for a 2nd score.  That would end the scoring for the Eagles but the Panthers tried to make it closer by scoring the 2nd half but would never get closer.  The Eagles took home their final victory of the season winning 16-6 over the Panthers.  What a great way to end the season.  Thanks to the parents for allowing me and my great coaching staff to have the opportunity to coach such a great group of kids.  We look for good things in the future.  Good luck to all the other Glen Ellyn teams in the playoffs.  - Coach Lilly

2003 Super Bowl Champions!

On Saturday August 16, 2003, the Glen Ellyn Golden Eagles Silver Yellow 100lb.started its season . A season which culminated in November with the team winning the Super Bowl at Northern Illinois University's Huskies Stadium . They won that game convincingly over a very good Downers Grove team. Downers Grove had given up only 7 points during the regular season. The Eagles scored 12 unanswered points. Downers Grove had never been shutout before. This was a monumental achievement by our Golden Eagles and was truly a testament to our defensive team. This win represented the first time in the history of Glen Ellyn football that a 100lb Silver team won the Super Bowl. A remarkable achievement. Credit obviously goes to the kids, but also to the tireless efforts of the coaching staff led by Head Coach Bruce Fisher and his staff of assistant coaches Tom Serruto, Joe Beymer and Kevin Douglas. The dedication and skill of our coaching staff was even more evident in the progress and development of many kids who had never played organized football before. A record of this achievement by this spirited bunch of 11 year olds has been captured in a video "A Championship Season", which can be seen on GETV, cable channel 17.--by Don Warman, Jim Berent, Photos by Fritz Geiger »go
